If you are a creative person, please try and understand the plight of others who are not like you. So here are the ten most common complaints from the corporates that I know:
1. We do not hate you, we just hate your tantrums
First thing first, corporates do not hate creatives. They do however despise it when a creative personnel throws a tantrum. If you have worked with creative people for any period of time, you know that tantrums are more common than they should be in a professional environment.
2. We need something that the client can approve
You idea, no matter how brilliant, will never ever see the thumbs up until it meets the client’s guidelines. The same guidelines that were provided at the time of project assignment. Budget does not magically grow to 10 times what was originally allotted.
3. Your delays put us in a very awkward position
Creative people are also perfectionists. A lot of non-creative people get that. This simply cannot mean that you hand over the draft 2 weeks after the allotted deadline.
4. We will answer all questions, just make them relevant
It is great that so many people want to make sure that they understand the client’s needs. If you have questions, ask away, but keep them focused on the project at hand. And at least go through the notes given to you, instead of asking me things that have already been answered in full!
5. There is a difference between taking a risk and blindly gambling
Take some time off and attend a risk management class for once! Seriously guys, the next time I have to make a presentation to a client which has no bearing to what the client asked, I might as well just quit my job.
6. We hate last minute changes directed by the client as well
We get that having to change something to a finalized product is infuriating. We are just trying to make the best of a not-so-good situation. Us telling you “It will only take you a minute” is just us trying to appease the client. It just so often happens that it indeed will only take you a minute.
7. Your gut feelings will give us a heart attack one day
We work with creative people because they are brilliant. They come up with things I could never have thought of. This, however, involves risks. Every time you do something without warning us first, the risk causes our hearts to race. Give us a fair warning at least. We are on the same team!
8. We do not want you to turn into a sheep either
If we needed to copy something that already exists, we would not need you. So stop passing off someone elses work as your own after switching the fonts and altering the colours. Your job is to come up with something fresh, not to follow the crowd.
9. We loathe being shut out from your work process
Feedback is crucial. No corporate ever likes it when you lock yourself up in the studio with your team and only emerge to give presentations when a superior twists your arm for it.
10. We love it when you give the client something he didn’t ask for, but loved all the same
We absolutely love you when you deliver exactly what you were hired to do. In that moment, when you take an idea and shape it into something that the client cannot resist, all the pains that you make us suffer are worth it. When I come up to you at the end of the presentation to shake your hand or pat you on the back, just know that I am truly being sincere.
